Poem – Our sister’s 18 stabs

July 9, 2009

Bisimillah, alhamdulillah.

18 stabs by an axle whirring
Through Sherbini’s breast and baby murdering

In a Faranji court they let her fall
Their response – silence from their pedestals tall

Let the memory fade, a short story,
An aberration consigned to history,

Media complicit – inert and silent
Her hijaab rendering her a miscreant

Consign her to the African page
From the European conscience purge

Wrap her in an Egyptian flag
Muslims – divided and ruled their tag

Will her memory cease
Drowned by their unholy sleaze?

Her crime modesty and purity
Their rule devilish depravity

Can the two compare?
Shall we drown in this miserable sea of despair?

Western silence bears witness
To their concealed malice

Is the French tsar cozy with his fire of hate?
Didn’t you smile as you heard of her fate?

Will hands move or have we no shame?
Is there not a flicker of belief left in our limbs lame?

On July 1st Marwa El Sherbini, an Egyptian researcher living in Germany, was stabbed to death 18 times inside a courtroom in the city of Dresden, in front of her 3-year-old son. She had won a verdict against a German man of Russian descent who had verbally assaulted her because of her veil. Her husband, who rushed in to save her when she was attacked in the courtroom, was shot by the police. Marwa’s death was not reported by any Western news media until protests in Egypt erupted after her burial. The reporting that followed focused on the protests; the murder was presented as the act of a “lone wolf,” thus depriving it of its context and its social meaning. (Walid El Houri, 8th July 2009)

This is another episode of ascending atrocity against Islam. Salman Rushdie, Bosnia,Iraq (twice), Afghanistan and the chronic bleeding ulcer of Palestine, all are the proof of what Qur’an has revealed 1400 years ago. “The enemy of Islam have more hatred in their heart than what they express from their mouth” as well as “The Jews and Christian will never be happy with us until we become like them (May Allah protect us).
    What is the solution ?
First of al we should stop being apologetic of being a Muslim.
Secondly we should not miss any opportunity to educate these arrogant, narrow minded and racist people of the true facts about Islam.
There would be some hot blooded among us responding with a heavy hand. Of course those actions cross the boundary of Islam. We should emphasize the political and human reaction to the perpetual double standard being applied against us instead of being apologetic.

What is a Faranji? Did she lose her case in the court? Has she been denied justice in the court or in the media? Is this poem saying that Germans are devils and depraved?

Faranji : Ar. for Frankish people, used by Muslims to refer to the crusaders in the Middle Ages.

    Court case appeal outcome: unknown.

Court justice denied: case is pending.

    Media justice denied: clearly yes.

Are all Germans lunatics: clearly not, but does German / European society realise the effect of demonising Muslims? They have not demonstrated it.

Love thy God (Allah, or what ever name your language has given to the All Mighty Lord of all creation)

Love thy Nieghbor (What ever race or religion for we all have to live on this wonderful gift from the All Mighty)

    Why is it so hard.

Good question, one that needs to be addressed to the man who wielded the knife, to those who promoted this violence through their intolerance of a head covering and to their silence in condemning the killing. Muslim observers will not fail to notice that this is Christian Europe not practicing its love thy neighbour maxim.

Where were your poems during the 98 cases of Muslims stabbing Muslimas in Germany (JUST the 2009 numbers)? I can’t help to think you are just a bunch of bigoted hypocrites, sorry to say so. End of message – you can now keep on wallowing in self-pity and remaining silent about your great “religion”’s achievements. And BTW: Pls leave my country and return to where everything is akbar, will you?

Why is it..that when non muslims are murdered by muslims…not a tear is shed in the islamic community. The jewish women killed in the jewish synagogue in Seattle, Washington by a muslim youth, the lubitcher orthodox rabbi and his wife tortured and murdered in Mumbai India over two months ago. Whenver there is an issue with muslims..they are the ‘victims’ whenever it is a non muslim murdered in the name of allah, the tears do not flow very easily it seems…what hyprocrisy.

Thanks for your comment. I wish it was as easy as saying that me and my kind were bigoted hypocrites but I am afraid the answer is not that easy. As for the other murders and any murder in the world whether Muslim or non-Muslim as a Muslim I categorically condemn. As a human my resources are limited and thus I cannot compose for every death, and as a poet I can only compose when moved by my inner voice. As for God (Arabic term Allah also used by Christian Arabs & Jews) He is akbar everywhere. Finally leaving your country, I am afraid the concept of the nation state as it stands is that the country is now ours and if I am obliged to leave so are you and if you have the right to stay so have I. Perhaps in cooler moments reflection will allow a better and more balanced response.

The flowing of tears is an expression of pity or sadness. As Muslims we do not want the non-Muslim world to express their sadness or shed their tears for Muslims killed. But we do want them to adhere to their own principles of justice. I don’t think that is asking for much. To not do so is the real hypocrisy.

We will shed our tears for our dead and you for yours but justice must be for both and in equal measure. Islam does not as a concept believe in a lesser human with his/her right to justice. Unlike some religion we have no gentiles to exploit. Justice is due to all. As for condemning something that is not right and wrong I have condemn and every common Muslim man and women condemns the murder of innocent men and women whether Jews, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, animist or secular.
The sad reality on the account of tears are that the balance is in favour of those who are real and have a media presence while the faceless thousands who are killed among Muslim populations and others such as in Africa are mere statistics denegrated to the margins of some historians book yet to be published.
